This week: Memphis is quietly building one of the most impressive football stadiums in college football.

While everyone is talking about Penn State's massive Beaver Stadium renovation, Texas Tech pouring oil money into athletics, or Florida's $1.4 billion stadium transformation, hardly anyone is paying attention to what's happening in Memphis.

The Tigers are in the middle of a $226 million renovation of Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium that's completely changing the future of Memphis football. The project includes a rebuilt west side, premium seating, massive new videoboards and NFL-style game-day technology, all designed to help Memphis compete at the highest level of college football.

This story is also personal for me.

I lived in Memphis for nine years. I remember when Memphis football struggled to fill the Liberty Bowl, and I also got to watch the program transform into one of the winningest Group of Six programs in the country.

Most people know Memphis as a basketball city.

But behind the scenes, it's becoming one of the biggest stories in college football investment.

So today, as a former Memphian, I'm taking you inside this entire transformation, and at the end, I'll give my official ranking of Memphis' $226 million stadium upgrade.

🏟️ Seating Capacity: 45,632 fans

💰 Projected Cost: $226.5 million

🖥️ Videoboards: 47' × 114' South videoboard + 17' × 284' LED ribbon board (one of the largest in college football)

💺 Premium Seating: 1,600+ premium seats, including 26 luxury suites, 36 loge boxes, 370 club seats, and multiple premium hospitality spaces (gotigersgo.com)

The renovation actually reduces capacity from nearly 60,000 seats to 45,632. While that may sound like a downgrade, the goal is to create a louder, more premium game-day environment instead of filling empty seats. It will still rank among the largest stadiums in the Group of Six.

The fact that nationally recognized firms like Populous, Barton Malow, and MFA are leading the project gives me confidence this will be one of the highest-quality renovations outside the Power Four.

It's still too early to give this a higher score since fans haven't experienced a full season in the renovated stadium.

That said, the combination of premium hospitality spaces, improved sightlines, new technology, upgraded concessions, and a more intimate seating bowl should make this one of the best game-day experiences in the Group of Six.

Facilities still matter.

With new head coach Charles Huff, a renovated stadium, and one of the strongest corporate relationships in college athletics through FedEx, Memphis has another major recruiting advantage.

For recruits deciding between a lower-tier Power Four school and a top Group of Six program, these upgrades make Memphis an even more attractive destination.

The long-term economic impact is still unknown, but projects like this typically generate millions in additional annual revenue through premium seating, sponsorships, concerts, and other major events.

The AutoZone Liberty Bowl was already producing an estimated $25–30 million in annual economic impact for the Memphis area. A modernized stadium should only increase the venue's ability to host high-profile events and create new revenue opportunities.

This may not be the biggest stadium renovation in college football, but it could be one of the smartest.

Instead of chasing the largest capacity, Memphis is investing in what matters most today: recruiting, premium experiences, fan engagement, and long-term revenue.

For a Group of Six program with Power Four ambitions, this renovation is a major step in the right direction.
